Fireworks and Pets , Be Prepared for the Unexpected
SAVANNAH, GA (December 31 2009): Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan Police Department Animal Control Unit encourages everyone who is planning on attending fireworks displays, to leave their pet in their home.
A dog that usually never leaves the yard may get scared and run in fear. Never leave your dog on a chain to avoid that from happening, not only is it against the law, it can prove to be very harmful and even fatal.
Our Animal Shelter has become accustomed to receiving dogs that run in fear during fireworks celebrations and are rescued by our Animal Control Officers or good Samaritans who bring them to us for their safety.
The inside pets who never misbehave, may also do things out of the ordinary or even destructive during this time. You certainly do not want to come home to a house where accidents have occurred, curtains ripped,
things chewed etc… here are a few precautions:
· In a secure room, leave a radio or television on at normal volume. This helps mask any outside noises, and it keeps them company.
· Utilize a Chew Toy or another distraction (my cats like the plastic disk with the ball in it)
· Close the curtains or blinds to block any flashing lights.
· If your pet will have outside access, (Animal Control recommends they don’t) make sure his/her collar and tags are around their neck, and not in a drawer.
· If you know your pet has exhibited serious anxiety or fear at loud noises in the past, speak with your vet. Medication may be prescribed.
· Do not use fireworks around your pets. Pets, especially cats are curious by nature, and that curiosity could result in serious injuries around their face and paws.
· Unused fireworks are toxic if chewed. Keep them away from your pets.
Remember, some pets are extremely sensitive or afraid of fireworks and it’s up to you to minimize their stress.
